WHAT IS HEMODIALYSIS

How the treatment works

When the kidneys can no longer filter waste, excess fluid, and toxins from the blood on their own, hemodialysis does that work for them. During each session, blood is drawn from your body through a vascular access, circulated through a dialysis machine that cleans it, and then returned safely to your body. The entire process is closely monitored by our trained nursing and technical staff from start to finish.

Blood is drawn out

Through your vascular access, a small amount of blood is drawn out at a time and directed to the dialysis machine.

Waste is filtered

The dialyzer (artificial kidney) removes waste products, toxins, and excess fluid from the blood as it passes through.

Clean blood returns

The cleaned blood is returned to your body. Staff monitor your blood pressure, weight, and vitals throughout.

WHAT TO EXPECT

FAQ

In-center hemodialysis is recommended for patients whose kidneys can no longer filter waste effectively. Your nephrologist will evaluate your kidney function, labs, and overall health to determine whether this is the right treatment for you.

Wear comfortable, loose clothing. If you have an AV fistula or graft, wear short or loose sleeves on that arm. Bring a photo ID and insurance card to your first visit. After that, just bring yourself and anything you want to do during treatment.

Most patients tolerate treatment well. Some people feel tired or slightly lightheaded after a session, especially at first. Our team monitors you throughout and will adjust your treatment if needed. Many patients find their energy improves over time as their body adjusts.

Yes, with planning. We can help arrange guest treatments at dialysis centers near your travel destination and provide documentation of your treatment needs. Let us know at least two to four weeks before your trip.

That depends on your health, home situation, lifestyle, and personal preference. Many patients do well in-center for years. Others eventually transition to a home modality. We offer all three options and will help you understand the pros and cons of each at your initial evaluation.

Not sure in-center is right for you?

We offer all three dialysis modalities. Your care team will help you understand which option fits your health and lifestyle best.
